Some of our Year 5 and 6 pupils had the opportunity to go and watch England play Australia at Wembley Arena this week. The match was part of the winter test series and with England already 1 - 0 up in the series the atmosphere was electric. Our girls were amazed at the skill and athleticism of the players in the fast paced and very exciting match. England had never won a test series against world number 1's Australia so a packed Wembley and our St. Helen's girls cheered England all the way to a historic victory. England won 51 - 49 and won the series!
Yesterday Year 3 had the lucky opportunity to visit the BBC studios at White City on a CBBC tour. It was immense fun! The children saw sets from many popular television programmes including Doctor Who, Match of the Day, Newsround, Blue Peter and Horrible Histories to name but a few.
The entertaining guides gave the children the chance to take on the roles of news readers, weather forecasters and game show contestants, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. It was an interesting and fun filled morning, with some great photo opportunities – although we are not allowed to give away any trade secrets!
During the week beginning 11th February we shall be holding a focus week on Safety and Well-being. A variety of activities has been planned for the children but we are keen to involve the parents also, and have arranged a Parents' Fair on the evening of Wednesday 13th February, starting at 7 p.m. The evening will start with a presentation from Paul Hay, an internet safety consultant, on internet safety for children, and then parents will be able to browse a range of stands with information on healthy eating, being active, creative relaxation, first aid, road, bicycle and car safety, and internet safety.
Click here for our Parents' Fair poster.
The evening is open to all parents, and we hope that many of you will attend.
Miss Maxwell is expecting a baby and will begin her maternity leave early in the summer term. During her leave, 2M will be taught by Mrs. Beverley Pinnell. Mrs. Pinnell is an ex-St. Helen's teacher who most recently taught Year 2 here at St. Helen's in 2011. Mrs. Pinnell will work alongside Miss Maxwell in the early part of the summer term so that she can get to know the children well. She is looking forward to returning to St. Helen's and I am very confident that the children will have an excellent term under her care and tutelage.
We wish Miss Maxwell all good wishes with this exciting news!
Booking forms have been sent home via book bags this week for hot meal bookings for the second half of term and for Holiday Club for the half term week. Please complete these promptly and return them by Friday 1st February. These forms have also been posted to the All School Documents page of this website.
It is important that children learn to use email safely and develop the appropriate etiquette for email communication. We will be providing all children from Years 2 to 6 with school email accounts. These accounts will be restricted so that children cannot send emails to, or receive emails from, anyone who is not a member of the school's email system.
Email communications between children and teachers should be through their school email accounts. If children below Year 2 wish to send information such as magazine articles via email, please do so on their behalf using your own email account.
The school has been contacted by traffic wardens who have noted that parents are stopping cars in the bus stop zones on either side of Long Lane when dropping children to school. Please be aware that it is illegal to halt your car within a marked bus stop zone. The school works hard to keep good relations with neighbours and the community at large and it is important that parents are seen to be following rules too. Any offenders risk receiving a ticket and/or fine from the traffic wardens, who will be continuing to monitor these zones.
Parents at both Upper and Lower School are reminded that the 'stop and drop' zones should be used only for waiting in your car while your children exit the vehicle. If you need to stop and get out of your car to get things from the boot or to speak with other parents or school staff, please find a parking space. This will ensure that there is a flow of traffic through the 'stop and drop' zones. Many thanks for your co-operation.
The annual Parents' Association Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday next week and the PA would like to extend a warm invitation to all parents who would like to attend. This meeting will be held to elect any new members who wish to join the committee, inform all members of the work carried out by the PA last year and give an overview of future ideas for the upcoming school year. Please do feel free to join us. If there are any questions, please feel free to email us at: firstname.lastname@example.org
