Last week a group of pupils were taken to see Wicked at The Apollo Victoria theatre in London's West End. This was the first trip for St. Helen's College children to the West End and was such a success that we hope to make it a yearly outing. The children absolutely loved the show and some of the children could even imagine themselves on the stage.
We had our Talent Festival this week. In Middle School we had items such as a talk and powerpoint on horse-riding, a demonstration of art, some amazing hula hooping, a puppet show, acting and some fantastic piano playing. At Upper School, amongst the items we had a very dynamic and confident group doing magic tricks and telling jokes, a DVD of Rhys playing the drums as he is presently in America performing, some acting, and some instrument playing. We are looking forward to the Singing Competition!
The Singing Competition will take place on Tuesday 10th June. The categories are 1) solo 2) duet and 3) group. (Both the latter with an element of harmony). Although there is no limit on the numbers for the group, the winners may have a smaller prize than the soloist or duo winners! We will choose winners from Years 2 and 3 for a Junior Category and Years 4, 5 and 6 for a Senior. The winners will sing at the Singers' Concert on Thursday June 12th and so the parents will get the opportunity to hear them at this event. The winners might also get the chance to sing at the School Fete.
Please let the office staff know what your child would like to sing so that we can make a list, and also find a karaoke style CD accompaniment or a piano part that can be given in advance to Mrs. Belvoir (Junior Competition) or Mrs. Allery (Senior Competition), preferably before half term. Mrs. Holly Hawkes, who is a professional opera singer, will judge the competition along with Mrs. Crehan.
We hope you enjoy these photographs from our recent assemblies. R1 did an assembly about traditional tales, Sunshine Nursery did an assembly about mini-beasts and 3B did an assembly about relationships. Well done to all the children involved!
If any current parents have a child who will be eligible for entry to our Nursery in September 2015 (any child born between 01.09.11 and 31.08.12), please do remember to register him or her as soon as possible if you have not already done so. Likewise, if you have family or friends who have children in this age bracket, please let them know that they should register soon to be considered for the 2015 Nursery intake.
We would like to remind parents of the school's policy about Healthy Eating. The following is a short extract from the policy, the full version of which can be accessed here.
Parents are often very generous when it is their child’s birthday, but treats should not be sent to school for distribution to friends. The exception is birthday cake, which should be sliced and individually wrapped at home. Teachers will then distribute it at school to be taken home at the end of the day.
Cake sales, to raise money for charity, will be held sparingly and parents and children will be urged to donate home-made cakes.
Teachers will occasionally distribute small treats for children – for example at Christmas and Easter or for a school celebration.
A big thank you to all those that attended the Barn Dance last Friday. We hope that you thoroughly enjoyed the event. There was lots of line, square and barn dancing which had many adults and children up on their feet. We also had a special surprise guest appearance by Lightening McQueen which the children all had a chance to sit inside! A Bar, Barbeque and plenty of sunshine ensured we all had a superb evening!
The Infants Sports Day will be held on Friday 20th June in Court Park. The PA usually provide drinks/tea coffee and a range of delicious cakes for the day. If you would like to help on the day or are a super baker and can provide a cake then please speak to a PA member or contact us on email@example.com

Tennis Team Borough Champions!
Many congratulations to all three of our junior mini tennis teams who took part in the Hillingdon Borough tennis tournament this week. The event, held at Tripletts Community Tennis Centre, was played in glorious sunshine and 13 school teams from across the Borough of Hillingdon took part. Teams played each other in the group stages with group winners progressing through to semi finals and finals. Our A team won matches against Cranford Park and Field End school teams and our C team won matches against St. Andrew's B, Laurel Lane and Sacred Heart C school teams to progress to the semi finals. Our B team narrowly missed out on progressing to the semi finals. After winning matches against Sacred Heart A and Ruislip Gardens, they lost to Hayes Park and were tied with them in the group. It was only by points being counted back that the teams could be separated and Hayes Park progressed through to the semi finals.
In the semi finals Hayes Park played St. Andrew's A and St. Helen's College A played St. Helen's College C! St. Andrew's and St.Helen's College C lost in the semi finals and were presented with bronze medals. This was a great surprise as originally St. Helen's College was only going to take two teams and our C team only got to take part in the competition when another school dropped out of the competition on the day! The final between St. Helen's College A and Hayes Park was very close. After all of the matches were played, the match was drawn 2 - 2. However, resounding wins from Tito and Elsie 10 - 0 and 10 - 3 and close losses from Taran and Ayobami 8 - 10 and 7 - 10 ensured that St. Helens College A had won more points on the count back and we were crowned Borough champions! The team will now represent Hillingdon Borough at the School Games held at Crystal Palace in July.
Well done to everyone who took part. A special commendation must go to Genevieve from Y2 for standing in at very short notice to join the C team and winning three matches against older players from other schools in Y3 and Y4!
A team - Taran, Ayobami, Tito, Elsie
B team - James, Ashay, Victoria, Sharvari
C team - Ayomide, Aarush, Toke, Genevieve
Basketball Team Take Silver
Our Y6 basketball teams took part in the Hillingdon Borough basketball tournament hosted at Harlington School this week, competing against teams from around the borough. The teams played a 3 v 3 version of basketball which is fast paced and full of action. In total both teams played 5 matches each in a league format. Going into the final match against Hillingdon, our A team was in equal position in the league with Hillingdon. The match was close and, after some inspired defence and teamwork by St. Helen's College against a very talented Hillingdon team, St. Helen's College drew the match. This put both Hillingdon and St. Helen's College in joint first place in the league. So it all came down to the total baskets scored for each team. Hillingdon had just scored a few more than St. Helen's College, so they won the league and became Borough champions. We look forward to taking part in the next basketball tournament taking place at Brunel University in June. Well done to everyone in the teams!
A Team - Maegan, Sukrit, Dylan, Aria, Aarian and Shivraj
B Team - Charlie, Sumeet, Cayden, Balraj, Anneka and Millie
In conjunction with the many cycling events happening in London this summer and to celebrate the return visit of the Tour de France, TfL are running a Cycle Challenge competition over the month of June to encourage schools to cycle more often and to promote National Bike Week from 14th - 22nd June. Pupils can compete against pupils from schools across London to see which school cycles the most. The individuals who cycle the most will also win a prize. The competition will officially open on 2 June for pupils to start logging their miles cycled. The competition will close on Friday 27 June. If anyone would like to take up the challenge then please speak to Miss Walker by Tuesday next week so she can register you for the challenge and give you more information.
We would like to let parents know about some fun football sessions which run in Ruislip on Saturday mornings for 4-8 year olds. These are run by the brother of Mrs. Mann, our Sunshine Nursery teacher. More details are available here. We do hope that some of you will take your children along.
The Barn-B-Q this evening is completely sold out. Regrettably we will be unable to admit families who turn up without tickets so please do not come along hoping to buy a ticket 'on the door'. If you have submitted your application for tickets through the school office, then you are included in our count. Many thanks to all those who have bought tickets for the event - we look forward to sharing an enjoyable evening with you!
The Daily Telegraph featured one of our Old Helenians this week. At the age of 19, Josh Valman has established an international company which has a turnover of over £1 million. Well done, Josh! You can read about his journey by following the link below.
We always enjoy hearing about the activities and successes of Old Helenians and hope to expand our links with our alumni over the coming months and years so that we can share more of their news with you.
