Its origins are interesting. Some years ago, we asked our School Officers (Head Boys/Girls and House/Sports Captains) to encapsulate the school values in short, 'child-friendly' statements. The statements that they developed were:
Strive for excellence
Help others achieve
Care for each other
We were delighted with these values and the clever St. Helen's College mnemonic. We had 'values cards' made and gave one to each child. Since then, each year in the summer term, the children in Year 1 are presented with values cards by the Head Boys and Girls in a special assembly as part of their welcome into the Upper School.
Earlier this year, as part of strategy discussions with the staff, we decided that, in keeping with prep schools' tradition, it would be good to have a Latin motto. We settled on Excellentiam e Concordia as it mirrors the values identified by the pupils and accurately summarises what the school is all about.
In time, we shall incorporate this new motto into our branding and literature. We hope that the children, particularly now that they will be studying Latin, will recognise the importance of this motto and, as they move on to senior school and beyond, will hold it in in their minds and hearts and be guided by it.
