We have been very busy at school while you have been away, and the children were thrilled to discover the new facilities at the Upper School when they returned yesterday.
The art studio has now been completed. This attractive, 'sustainable' building uses a low-powered heat exchanger for temperature control, recycles rainwater, is built partly out of recycled materials and has a living roof. It will be used this term for music classes, and will be fitted out for art teaching during the summer holidays. Ms Turner, our Head of Art, is looking forward hugely to developing the subject next term when she has the benefit of a dedicated art studio.
The Zen Garden is near to completion. The idea of a quiet place for calm activities came from the Year 2 children at the School Council, and was voted for by their peers. Mrs. Gilham, our Head of Science, is a passionate garden designer and horticulturist, and she masterminded the planning and development of the garden. We are very grateful for her enthusiasm and expertise in researching the concept, developing the design, advising on planting plans, and indeed on doing a lot of planting herself and even donating plants from her own garden. Mrs. Gilham will involve the Year 2 children in the remainder of the planting. We shall be installing a greenhouse shortly, and Miss Wallis' father, who is a carpenter, is building two semi-circular benches which will encircle the fountain. Mrs. Gilham is looking forward to developing the gardening club, making full use of the plots which have been prepared for planting at the rear of the garden.
The extension and refurbishment of Windsor continues at a good pace, and is on programme, and the new kitchen and dining facilities will open in September.
