The children have had a very enjoyable half term with our trip to the Science Museum, Maths week and our visit to Lower School to read to the Year 1 children. The Speech competition is fast approaching. Semi-finalists will be selected in the week after half term and Mrs. Crehan will select the finalists the following week. Please encourage your child to practise as often as possible and preferably in front of an audience.
Our class assembly will be on Friday 7th March and I look forward to seeing some of you there. We have lots of budding actors and actresses in the class and I’m sure you are all excited to see what they produce.

This half term students will spend some time practising and perfecting skills needed in order to make mask work effective. They will review States of Tension and be introduced to archetypes. The children will then familiarise themselves with the use of the mask and finally create a group performance piece of mask work. KS
Our new class reader will be Tom’s Midnight Garden. The comprehension for this term will be linked to the poetry-based writing theme. We will be looking at performance poetry and the children will be practising their poems ready for the competition in March. There will also be the opportunity to look at poems from different cultures. TW
We will complete our look at traditional stories and the children will be writing their own story in the styles we have been studying. We then move on to poetry, writing poems about feelings, emotions and wishes. This will involve looking at adjectives, verbs, punctuation and the organisation of texts. TW
In maths this half term we will be consolidating and extending the children’s knowledge of fractions, decimals and written methods for multiplication and division. We will then move on to drawing, calculating and measuring angles. The children will also be studying the topic of measures, which includes: length, weight, capacity and volume. DAC/TW
We will be studying ‘gases and changing states’ in science. The children will revise ideas on solids, liquids and gases and will be introduced to useful gases. They will learn about the processes involved in the processes of changing states of matter and relate this to the water cycle. Their investigation will focus on evaporation and measuring air spaces in some materials. EG
We will begin looking at exploration and explorers during Tudor times. We will look at the voyages of Raleigh and Drake and look at how many European countries were building up their empires overseas and the ways in which they did this. This will include looking at the Aztec Empire and this topic will be continued in the summer term. SS
We will continue to explore Kenya and we will focus on different landscapes and biomes in this fascinating country. We will focus on Mount Kenya and the Savannah before moving on the discover what life is like in rural Kenya with the Masai tribe and compare life in the city of Nairobi with where we live. SAW
We will be continuing the topic of Islam and looking, in particular, at The Qur’an, good advice, the traditions of Ramadan and pilgrimage. Throughout the topic the children are encouraged to make comparisons with other religions and to discuss key issues. SS
We will continue our unit on school and school life. We will consider vocabulary for the various subjects and learn to express likes and dislikes, giving reasons for our preferences. We will continue to work on telling the time. RP/TMS
This half term we will be learning to describe people, pets and other animals. We will also be looking at different modes of transport. As usual we will be consolidating prior vocabulary and providing the children with lots of discussion opportunities. TW
Having learnt about how the internet and World Wide Web work, the children will create their own web pages. They will then learn how to use computers to control devices. MHL
This half term we will be continuing with our Rounds Topic where pupils will participate in practical activities. RA
We will be continuing with our Kenyan themed art work before some Easter crafts to finish the term. JT
In Positive Psychology we will be beginning a new topic of Positive Achievement, which will include doing an online strengths test which tells the children their character strengths. We will look at how we use these and we will set life goals and discuss what we are good at.
PE & GAMES
In Wednesday games lessons Year 5 girls will take part in netball activities and Year 5 boys will take part in football activities. Our swimming course continues on Fridays and all of the children will try to achieve the KS2 curriculum swimming award by the end of term. The final week of swimming will be on 21st March and the children will have a fun session to conclude their swimming lessons. SAW
