World Book Day Celebrations

Across the school the children have enjoyed a magical week of activities to celebrate World Book Day.

The week began with two fun and engaging author visits which set the tone for many more book inspired lessons throughout the week.

At Lower School the storyteller Liz Fost visited the children in Nursery – Year 2 to read from The Turtle Who Turned The Tide by Rachel Bright. The children were captivated by her entertaining reading, which was full of drama and excitement, and thoroughly enjoyed following the adventures of Tula the turtle.

Then on Tuesday Upper School welcomed Daniel Thompson, author of poetry collections, All of Me and Being You, where he led an interactive assembly for the children in Years 3 – 6. Daniel read aloud and shared the inspiration behind his own poetry which examines emotional well being, and shared various techniques and devices used in poetry to encourage pupils to explore their own writing style. It was a wonderfully inspiring session demonstrating how poetry can be a creative and accessible channel for freedom of expression.

It was great to see the children engage with the session and queue up outside the library ready to meet Daniel and have copies of his books personally signed!

This year the whole school theme for World Book Day was ‘magic’ and it certainly provided lots of inspiration for fabulous characters and exciting stories.

The children were brimming with excitement as they came to school in character costumes and throughout the day they enjoyed a variety of immersive activities designed to spark imagination and celebrate a love of reading.

At Ducklings the children enjoyed a visit from Year 6 ‘buddy readers’ who read aloud to their younger peers one-to-one and in small groups. Across Lower School the children created magic potions, completed word searches and other puzzles and took part in a whole range of craft activities based around books and reading.

At Upper School the children had an incredible welcome to school. In the Evans Garden there was a life-sized Death Eater and cauldron inspired by Harry Potter, and above the playground a Golden Snitch was suspended in the air!

Throughout the day the Year 6 English Prefects led assemblies about reading and the children enjoyed creative sessions in the library, read magic poetry, and even played Quidditch in PE!

Lunch was a Hogwarts inspired affair especially created by the team at Accent Catering who decorated the refectory as everyone’s favourite school of Wizardry. It was a wonderful day to celebrate books and cultivate a love of reading.
